(Enoch) Brown Schoolhouse Burial Site,
Antrim Township, Franklin County, PA
4. (Enoch) Brown Schoolhouse Burial Site

This burial plot marks the site of a massacre July 26, 1764. Enoch Brown, schoolmaster, and ten school children were murdered here by native Americans during the French-Indian war. One school boy, Archie McCullough, survived; and had retold the story of how the schoolmaster offered his own life in exchange for the lives of his children.

The site has been converted into Enoch Brown Park and a monument was constructed at the site of the original schoolhouse. The monument lists the names of those murdered here as follows:

Enoch Brown, schoolmaster

Dean, two brothers

Dunstan, George

Hale, Ruth

Hart, Ruth

Taylor, Eben

unknown (four)

The site poses a reminder to the tragic nature of violent conflict and the brutal destruction caused by war.
